Panch Pokhari trekking is one of the main features of Langtang National Park and Panch Pokhari, translatingto “five ponds” in local language is a recently opened camping trekking route in eastern Nepal. With its beautiful five glacier lakes, each lake has different names derived from Lord Shiva. Unsurpassed natural sceneries, rich cultural heritage and varied biodiversity, it is slowly but surely attracting the national as well as international tourists. Panch Pokhari is 9th highest altitude wetland in the world. These lakes lie in the base of Jugal Himal at an elevation of 4100 m,and carry a religious and spiritual significance to the Hindu and Buddhists community. The region of Panch Pokhari is encompassed by various Himalayas, namely Gauri shankar, Langtang Himalayan Range, Jugal Mountain Range (Gyalzen peak 6966m), Mt. Dorje Lhakpa(6,966m), Mt.Phurbi Chhyachu (6,637m), Mt. Madiya (6,257m), among others.
This Panch Pokhari trek starts with a six-hour ride from the capital city, Kathmandu to Chautara of Sindhupalchowk district. Throughout the trek, one will get an opportunity to experience the majestic view of the snow capped mountains lush green forests, massive gorges, rivers and waterfalls. They will also get to experience the rich traditions and cultures of Tamang and Sherpa communities.
Five ponds trekking starts from 1,450m and goes up to 4,100m at Panch Pokhari, a secluded pilgrimage site where the Janai purnima festival is held in August. Due to its religious significance and untarnished, unchallenged natural beauty, it is slowly gaining its fame.
Itinerary

Starting our trip, we will reach small and beautiful Chautara village of Sindhupalchowk district. We will rest here for the first day of the trip and will begin our trek from the next day. We will be exploring the village and can get some insight on the life style and culture of the local people.
On the second day reaching Chautara, we will be starting our main trekking of 5 hours, which will lead us to Sano Okhareni. On the way we would be greeted with the beautiful sight of peaceful existence of different ethnic groups in the same area. We will camp at Sano Okhareni which graces us with beautiful Mountain View.
We will be walking 1hour uphill from Sano Okhareni to ThuloOkhareni. From there our route becomes steeper but nonetheless full of stunning view of glowing rhododendron flower, pine forest, and if lucky, our national bird, Danphe. After a climb of about four hours further, we will reach to a summer pasture-ground where we conclude our today’s trek.
Fourth day starts with the smooth and steady walk through the lush forests of rhododendron, pine trees, junipers, oaks and some wildlife too. We conclude our trek of 5 to 6 hours in Pauwa Bas.
On this day we have a steep uphill walk of 3 hours. After that we have 1 and half hour of downward walk through the forest. We will be graced with the stunning view of the mountains on the way to HilleBhanjhyang, where we camp out for today.
With the rise of sun and starting beautiful morning at HileBhanjhyangwe would be having only about 4 hours of walk for the day thus we can take it easy on the steep uphill section to start the day, taking about an hour. Then we can enjoy the gradual descent of about 3 hours through rocky hills and rhododendron forest into camp at NarsimPati.
On seventh day of trek we will reach the final destination of our route. We will have about 3 hours of gradual ascent through rocky hills to reach this beautiful pilgrimage site.
Today we will be doing a 1 and half hour of uphill ascent to catch the stunning view of the sunrise over the mountains and our panoramic view includes Mt.DorjeLakpa, JugalHimal Range, Rolwaling Range and Langtang Range. After the viewing, we head back to Panchpokhari to back and began our journey home. We have about 6 hours descend to travel through to reach TupiDanda where we will reside for today.
Ninth day of trek, we will be having about 5 hours of walking, 2 of which are quite steep downhill and the rest is quite level as we make our way through terraced fields to the beautiful village of Dhap, which is mostly occupied by Tamang families.
Rest Day
Today we will be traveling for 6 hours downhill, passing through terraced fields, stunning and beautiful villages. MelamchiPul Bazaar which lies at the bank of MelamchiKhola (stream) and Indrawati River, is comparatively a big town for this area. We will camp by the riverside and if you like you can refresh yourself with a dip in the river.
The last day of the trek starts with memorizing the beautiful time spend in the previous 11 days and we will return back to Kathmandu, enjoying the view along the way.
