Trip Overview
Kanchenjunga Base Camp trekking is wilderness & unspoiled trekking trails in eastern part of Nepal and is perfect for those adventurous enough and who have the time to travel here. The term “Kanchenjunga” stands for crystal clear in Nepali. Kanchenjunga (8586m) is the third highest mountain in the world and is also popularly known as the “Five Treasures of the Great Snow” i.e. Gold, Silver, Precious Stones, Grain, and Holy Scriptures. You will pass through stunning Himalayan vistas, ancient forests, prime wildlife habitat, and into the heart of traditional cultures and communities. . The ethnic groups such as the Rai and Limbu people live peacefully together in a magnificent wealth of flora nourished by the higher summer rainfall in the region, in some of the most outstanding mountain vistas anywhere in the Himalaya Despite its stunning natural beauty, the Kanchenjunga region has remained off the radar of most trekkers given its remote location and lack of infrastructure (until recently it was camping only)
Due to the winding trails of the Kanchenjunga Trek that go through High Mountain passes and reaching elevations of 5,150 meters- the journey is categorized as a moderately strenuous trip. It is surrounded by a spectacular National Park characterized by exceptional natural and cultural diversity. We can see massive wildlife during the trekking such as snow Leopard, Musk deer, Red Panda many more. As the trek commences, you will witness the slow change in the landscape. And a variation in vegetation and wildlife. This route encompasses Himalayan coniferous forests, alpine shrub, meadows, and grasslands. This challenging adventure gives you plenty of adventurous and amazing memory to cherish for lifetime. The main highlights of Kanchenjunga region trek are Kanchenjunga South Base Camp, Kanchenjunga North Base Camp, Yalung Glacier, and an altitude of 5,143 m, alpine forest, and quaint villages, Pangpema, including a panoramic view of Kanchenjunga and neighboring peaks.

We will take an early morning short flight from Kathmandu to reach Bhadrapur city. The beautiful view of mountains like Mt. Everest will provide a warm welcome to your expedition. Then after, we will be enjoying a jeep ride for about 8 hours to reach to Taplejung where we will stay for the night.
Our hiking to reach Kanchenjunga base camp starts from here. Our trail passes through several villages and is beside Tamor Nadi at first followed by Thunsa KholaWe cross a suspension bridge through the Ghunsa Khola and passes through Solima village on the way. . It will be 6 to 7 hours of trekking on the first day to reach Chiruwa where we will be staying for the night.
Trekking through the villages of Taplethok, Tamewa, Hellok, and Lelep, we move alongside Tamor River and descend towards Simbu Khola, which emerges from the Yalung Glacier. We then trek through steep and narrow Ghunsa Khola valley to finally arrive in Sukathum. Overnight stay in Sakathum.
It is a shorter walk today 6km but we gain almost 900m elevation. Moving with the flow of Ghunsa Khola, we head towards Amjilosa walking through steep uphill on exposed terrain. The ethnicity changes here and we will see more high elevation favoring Sherpa and Tibetan folks. We will stay at Amjilosa for the night.
Today our hike will take us through forested trail filled with rhododendrons and bamboo, before ascending to Gyabla. A cultural change occurs and locals start to be more Tibetan. We climb steeply to Kyapart, perched in the middle of terraced hills about 350m up from the Ghunsa Khola. The trail begins a grinding climb to the Sherpa village of Gyabla or also called Kyapar. Overnight stay in Gyabla.
We will hike towards Ghunsa through a broad meadow and then climb a small hill and descend to cross the river to reach the Tibetan village of Ghunsa. We pass through several Manes and a monastery nearby.Ghunsa is the capital of Kanchenjunga region. The area has good telecommunication facilities, accommodation, and good meals. Returning to Ghunsa allows retracing our previous days with different perspective of the trail and the scenery around.

There are prayer flags strung across one of the steeper sections of the trail which is very near to the Sele La pass. We stay in Tseram for the night.
Just after Tseram, the towering heights of Kabru and Rathong peep over the moraine. The trail is fairly downhill and as the day progresses, the trees become sparser and more stunted, giving us glimpses of the snow-capped giants ahead and of the massive snout of the Yalung Glacier. We pass through a small settlement of Lapsang before reaching Ramche where we will be staying overnight.
From Ramche, we walk further up the valley. We then follow a stream before climbing on the moraine top until confronted by Kanchenjunga’s southern face. We walk further ahead for a glimpse of the Jannu Himal. We continue our trek further towards the Oktang Monastery. From here, we climb further up and reach the Yalung Base Camp. It is a home to heart taking view of Kumbakarna (Jannu), Nyukla Lachung and other Himalayan peaks as the view is so clear and nearly. We return back to Ramche for an overnight stay.
