Located in the heart of the city Janakpur, Nepal, Janki Temple is dedicated to Hindu Goddess Sita and is one of the most holy places for the Hindu people. Janaki Temple is also famous with the name ‘Naulakha Mandir’ (meaning nine lakhs). The cost for the construction of the temple was about nine lakhs hence the name. The temple occupies 4860 sq. feet in an area and is 50 meters high. It is a three storied structure made entirely of marble of stone in a mixed style of Islamic and Rajput domes. All 60 rooms are decorated with colored glass, engraving and paintings, with beautiful lattice windows and turrets.
According to the Hindu legends, it is believed that current Janaki temple is built in the site where the Goddess Sita was born. Sita was the daughter of King Janak and later married Lord Rama, then prince of Ayodhya. Their marriage ceremony had occurred in the nearby temple which is also called vivaha mandap.
A golden statue of Goddess Sita was found in 1657 at the very spot. Queen Vrisha Bhanu, of the Indian State of Tikamgarh built the temple in 1910. In the months of December and November thousands of devotees visit Janaki temple for the Viavah Panchami or rather the five days marriage ceremony that is reenacted in various forms.
