Trip Overview
The Manaslu trekking route was just opened for trekking in 1991 is yet to touch the quiddities of modernization, as a result, the village settlements along the Manaslu Circuit Trek is mostly isolated offering quaint solitude. Less than two percent of trekkers go to Manaslu. This means that even in the high season you will not meet many other groups. The round Manaslu Trek will reward the adventurers with a tremendous alpine enjoy and gives a aggregate of rich way of life history, unsurpassed splendor, and natural variety. Not just the spellbinding natural beauty, but the traditional Tamang and Sherpa settlements with their unique cultures are another highlight of the trip. Following the off-beaten trail, this amazing journey takes you around the world’s eighth highest mountain in the world. Manaslu trek is remote, physically demanding, culturally enriching and scenically uplifting. The circuit takes you from the steamy lowlands with their terraces of rice and millet, through the mighty gorges of the Budi Gandaki with its turquoise waters and amazing waterfalls.
The trailhead of the Manaslu Circuit trek is the closest to Kathmandu of the major Nepalese treks. That said, it's still an adventurous 126 km (80 miles) drive from Kathmandu to Soti Khola, which takes about 6 hours by jeep or 8+ hours by public bus. The foliage changes from sub-tropical jungles in the Himalayan foothills to alpine woodlands as you move ahead from Soti Khola further up to the village of Namrung, and the Larkya La Pass at 5220 meters..The highest point in this trek is the ‘Larkya La Pass’ which is widely believed to be one of the most dramatic pass crossing the Himalayas. Like all Himalayan Glacier's itineraries this trek also ensures adequate time for proper acclimatization.
Itinerary
+-
Upon arrival at Tribhuwan International Airport, you will be taken to the hotel. After the resting you will be provided with the briefing off the overall tour.
Today we will have an 8-10 hours’ drive from Kathmandu to Soti Khola. Through paved roads, the drive is rather pleasant for the first four hours to Dhading Bensi, the district headquarters of Dhading at 1050 meters. But we will be on rougher surfaces for the second section to Arughat. Upon reaching Arughat, a major town in the region we drive further towards Sotikhola where we will be staying overnight.
Today our trekking starts. The meandering path of today’s hike passes through forest, colorful villages, clean streams, pretty waterfalls and green dales until we reach Lapu Besi, which is a Monogolian inhabited village. We will then descend to the wide, sandy riverbed and then continue along a winding mountain path overlooking the river. Overnight in Machha Khola.
Today we will start walking across the twisting road on the bank of Buri Gandaki The trail is narrow at first and gently heads up and down, eventually crossing the Tharo Khola to reach Khorlabesi. After more ascending and descending, we will arrive at a small hot spring in Tatopani—a good place to take a break. The valley sides are steep until they are impassable and the route then switches to the left bank by way of a suspension bridge, the trail is quite exposed and challenging in some places & this is the beauty of the wild. After a short section of forest path we reach a single teahouse at Doban and above Doban, the Budi Gandaki descends on an impressive series of rapids. With white sandy areas along the riverside, the scenery undergoes a drastic transformation as the elevation increases until we reach Jagat. Overnight stay in Jagat.
Today, the early part of the trek moves gently uphill and then somewhere through a flat leveled path, we cross a suspension bridge over Budhi Gandaki before we enter Philim, Philim is a big village mainly inhabited by the Gurung community. From here, the trail turns north just above the lowest house in the village and stays on a fairly level trail as it crosses millet fields to Ekle Bhatti. From Ekle Bhatti we trek along to pass Pewa, traverse along a small campsite and continue through the valley until we reach the village of Deng where we will stay the night.
We will take a brief walk from Deng and then we cross the Budhi Gandaki and climb to reach Rana. From here we climb for a while and then head west to Budhi Gandaki valley. The trail then proceeds to Ghap through several landslide zones. At this point, you must be extra careful as you walk. The trail then follows the river upstream through a dense forest and leads to a narrow gorge. Keep going until you notice the forest becomes less dense. This rewarding part of the walk is a magnificent way to experience the Manaslu Conservation Area. The pleasant walk continues and after a last steep climb we reach Namrung. Overnight stay in Namrung.
Today, we will trek over a winding path which moves through the inner Himalayan range and on the way, we will enjoy mountain views of Rupinala pass, Mt. Manaslu, Gorkha Himal, Dwijen Himal, Saula Himal, Lajing peak, and many other silver grey mountains and peaks. Climbing through a forest of firs, rhododendrons and oaks the trail enters the closely packed houses of Lihi (2900m) and several Buddhist villages along the way to rech Sama Gaon. Sama Gaon is the principal village of the Nubri people which holds a large gompa, many shops, a health post, heliport and telephone/wifi access, etc. Overnight stay in Sama Gaon.
This is the day of acclimatization at Sama Gaon to prevent altitude-related illness. Surrounded by mountains in a peaceful forest, we take a breather to acclimatize and relax. As an acclimatization hike, you can walk to Pungyen Gompa on the east of the Nubri Valley. Or you can hike to Manaslu Base Camp for excellent views of Samdo (Pang phuchuli); Nagdi chuli, Simnang Himal, Manaslu glacier, Manaslu ice fall. Return back to Sama Gaon for the overnight stay.
After breakfast in Samagaon, you'll descend to the Budhi Gandaki River and follow it to a bridge over a side stream. You'll pass several mani walls as the valley begins to widen. It is an easy trail on a shelf above the river passing the juniper and birch forests of Kermo Kharka. The mountain views along this route are amazing and get you close to the Tibetan border. The Tibetan border is just four kilometers away from Samdo, but visitors are not allowed to pass the border. In the afternoon we will explore the village and the surrounding hills and come back at Samdo to spend the night.
The trail today is rocky and zigzags all the way to your destination. We start our day trip by crossing a wooden bridge over Budhi Gandaki River and begin a hike upwards to reach the valley of the Salka Khola and from there climb up again to Dharamsala, also known as Larke Phedi. The short walk today also leaves plenty of time for acclimatization and relaxing in the afternoon. Overnight in Dharmashala.
Thought today’s trail is a more challenging, you'll encounter a number of rustic villages, clear glacier lakes, beautiful valleys, and a wide range of flora and fauna, not to mention some notable snowcapped peaks. After a short climb from Dharamsala, we reach a valley on the north side of the Larkya Glaciers. Finally, we walk across moraines of the glacier, making a gradual ascent which becomes steeper only in the last section of the pass an enjoy the amazing view o Larkya peak, sunrise, Mt. Manaslu, Ratna chuli, Cheo Himal and many other snow capped mountains and peaks. It is then a steep descent as we pass through moraines to Bhimthang where we will be staying overnight.
On climbing downhill, you will walk through the lush forests full of flora and fauna including rhododendron bushes. You will reach the highest cultivated land in this valley of Karche at 2785m and walking down you cross a stream through fig tree and rhododendron forests to reach Tilije. Overnight stay in Tilije.
Crossing this high pasture, you will descend the valley of the Burdin Khola to the area of the Base Camp for the West side of Manaslu. You trek all the way over a descended path along the bank of Dudh Khola (river) and Marsyangdi River. Further down, we come across Karte village and after quite a bit of walking we cross a bridge over Marshyangdi Khola. We also come across some mani walls before reaching the village of Tal, situated at the foot of a large waterfall. . Overnight stay in Tal.
You can take a bus back to Kathmandu from Tal. The drive from to Kathmandu via Besi Sahar offers an opportunity to enjoy both hill and mountain landscapes often coming into direct view with the banks of the Marsyangdi and Trishuli rivers. The day in Kathmandu can either be spent in leisure or perhaps we catch up with some last minute shopping. And at evening you’ll have a farewell dinner and overnight at Kathmandu.
