Trip Overview
The Everest Gokyo Lake trek is ideal for hikers who wish to take up more challenge and "stay off the beaten path" while treading upon remote Nepalese trails. Nestled in a hidden valley of the Khumbu region, Gokyo village is one of the Himalayas’ unsung treasures. The high lush valleys of Khumbu with rural civilization, colorful monasteries, prayer flags, Namche Bazar, Sagarmatha national park and lots extra might be one of the enchanting recollections of your experience. During the Everest Gokyo Lake trek, you can also get insight into the culture and lifestyle of the Sherpa people, the major inhabitants of this region who are famous for mountaineering in the world.
The flight from Kathmandu takes to Lukla from where the Everest Gokyo Trek starts. From there the walk heads towards Gokyo via Namche, the ancient Tibetan trading hub. Your trek will bring you over the winding path between forgotten valleys, snaking around tranquil lakes and traditional villages. You’ll also come face-to-face with the jewels of the Gokyo Lakes: Gokyo Ri, and the Fifth Lake - the splendor of which overlooks a stunning view of majestic Everest. Trekking to the Everest Base Camp through Gokyo Lakes, in a nutshell, will be a lifetime experience with the enthralling sights of Mt. Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Nuptse, Amadablam, and Pumori.
Itinerary
+-
Upon arrival at Tribhuwan International Airport, you will be taken to the hotel. After the resting you will be provided with the briefing off the overall tour.
We will take an early flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. The Lukla flight is one of the most dramatic short flights in the world. The Lukla Airport itself is located on a hill and contains a single runway that drops off towards its end to the deep gaping valley below. From Lukla our hiking starts with an easy walk through Chaurikharka village and descending towards Dudhkoshi Ghat (2,530m/8,300ft). The trail follows the bank of the Dudhkoshi River until Phakding (2,652m/8,700ft) where we will be staying overnight
After breakfast, we will have three hours walk to the Monzo at 2,835 m which is an entrance place of the Sagarmatha National Park. We pass through area of rhododendron, blue pine forest and more which is really superb experience especially during the spring. After crossing a suspension bridge, we pass Jorsale village and walk alongside of the Dudh Koshi and Bhote Koshi rivers and finally reach Namche Bazaar. Namche Bazaar, because of its strategic location, is the commercial hub of the Khumbu region. It is located on a mountain side and views of the Thamserku Peak and the Kongdi RI Himal from here are amazing. Overnight stay at Namche Bazaar.
At this point, we will take a well-deserved break! Today will be spent resting and allowing our bodies to become acclimatized to the lofty altitude. We can either opt to do a small hike of 2 hours to Everest View Point or we can laze around the Namche Bazaar and stroll around through its cafes, restaurants colorful museums etc. Overnight at Namche Bazaar.
The trails easy in the beginning that leads up to Kyangjuma & climb steeply out of the valley through rhododendron forests, which give way to fragrant stands of juniper and large conifers as the elevation increases. The trail passes through Yak pastures and summer settlements. The trail descends in a series of steep switchbacks down a sandy slope to the Dush Koshi. Overnight stay in Phortse Thanga.
The trail climbs a ridge for an excellent view both down the valley to Kengtega and up towards Cho Oyu and descend to a river and again climbs steep to the terminal moraine of the Ngozumpz glacier. On our way, wild lives like pheasants, mountain goats and the mysterious musk deer are amazing. Offering us good views of Cho Oyu, Kantega, and Thamserku, the trail takes us through many summer settlements and a charming hamlet of Luza (4360 m) and to Machhermo where our hike for today end. Overnight stay at Machhermo.
Today the trek takes us at one of our final destination, Gokyo A short, steep climb leads from the Machhermo Valley on to the steep grassy slopes of the Dudh Kosi Valley. Upon crossing an iron bridge over a stream, the trail levels out as it follows the valley past the first lake, known as Longpongo, at 4690 m. At the sight of the second lake, Taboche Tsho, we become mesmerized by the shimmering turquoise blue sheet of water sparkling in the sun. Little ahead of the second lake, we reach the third lake, the two linked by a surging stream. Above the lake provides panoramic views of Cho Oyu, Gyachung Kang, Lhotse, Makalu, Cholatse and Tawache. Overnight stay in Gokyo.
Today we head back to Machherm where we will stay the night.
Today is a relatively long hike but it’s a good trail and all downhill. The lower elevation makes things easier as well. The trek spends most of the day going down the Gokyo Valley with some good views of the peaks before you intersect back with the main route up to Everest Base Camp and head back to Namche. Will spend the night in Namche Bazaar.
We will work though rhododendron and pine forests with the view of distance snow covered peak before arriving Phakding and then to Lukla This will be your last night on the mountain, which can be bittersweet. Overnight stay in Lukla.
In the morning, you'll hop a brief flight from Lukla to Kathmandu, where your journey both began and ends. You will be transferre to your hotel, where you can have a nice room wiht good hot shower and take your time relaxing.
