Trip Overview
The Everest Region is one of Nepal’s top trekking destinations, and the 3 high passes of the Khumbu is a trailblazing trek into the familiar wilderness above the tree tops of the Everest region. These 3 truly gritty high passes known the world over as the Kongma La (5,535m), Cho La (5,420m) and Renjo La at (5,340m) of the better known Khumbu zone is what daredevil climbers will want to do once in a lifetime because of its sheer beauty and the formidable challenges it poses. Along with the exhilarating adventure in the high passes, we will also set foot on the Everest base camp, climb Kala Patthar and Gokyo Ri; and tour Gokyo Lakes.
The Three Passes Trek to Everest Base Camp is arguably the most complete trek in Nepal as it covers most of the Everest region on its circular route. This trek provides a lifetime memory of panoramic views of the Everest and others Himalayan range. The venture also covers well known trails that include EBC, the towering Kalapathar and the tranquil Gokyo valley with its emerald lakes. The cultural aspects of this trip are simply amazing as it gives you deep insights of mountain traditions and how mountain communities survive in these harsh zones, but yet reserve their warm smiles for visitors despite the biting cold.
Itinerary
+-
Upon arrival at Tribhuwan International Airport, you will be taken to the hotel. After the resting you will be provided with the briefing off the overall tour.
We will take an early flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. The Lukla flight is one of the most dramatic short flights in the world. The Lukla Airport itself is located on a hill and contains a single runway that drops off towards its end to the deep gaping valley below. From Lukla our hiking starts with an easy walk through Chaurikharka village and descending towards Dudhkoshi Ghat (2,530m/8,300ft). The trail follows the bank of the Dudhkoshi River until Phakding (2,652m/8,700ft) where we will be staying overnight
After breakfast, we will have three hours walk to the Monzo at 2,835 m which is an entrance place of the Sagarmatha National Park. We pass through area of rhododendron, blue pine forest and more which is really superb experience especially during the spring. After crossing a suspension bridge, we pass Jorsale village and walk alongside of the Dudh Koshi and Bhote Koshi rivers and finally reach Namche Bazaar. Namche Bazaar, because of its strategic location, is the commercial hub of the Khumbu region. It is located on a mountain side and views of the Thamserku Peak and the Kongdi RI Himal from here are amazing. Overnight stay at Namche Bazaar.
At this point, we will take a well-deserved break! Today will be spent resting and allowing our bodies to become acclimatized to the lofty altitude. We can either opt to do a small hike of 2 hours to Everest View Point or we can laze around the Namche Bazaar and stroll around through its cafes, restaurants colorful museums etc. Overnight at Namche Bazaar.
We will today descend down through the Khumjung community and move to the major path to Everest at Shanasa. We will walk further to Trashinga and then move down to go across the Dudh Koshi at Phunkitenga (3,250 m.). We can see the magnificent view of the Everest from here. The village off Tengbiche is famous for its Tengboche monastery which is the biggest monastery of the Khumbu region. The monastery is a hamlet from where the sight of Mount Ama Dablam, Mount Everest and numerous other peaks are beautiful to look at. Overnight stay at Tengboche.
Today our hiking will begin by slightly descending through the forest of birch, juniper, fir and rhododendron at Debuche. Here we only steady way up but due to the elevation we have to speed ourselves increasingly all the way through the day. While trekking we can admire good views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. Dingboche is called the “Summer Valley” of the Khumbu and contains a kilometer long wall built to protect the village’s crops from the cold winds that descends down the Imja Valley. Overnight stay at Dingboche.
To get used to the steady rise of the altitude, we will spend a day in Dingboche. A hike to Nagerjun is a great way to spend time at Dingboche. Nagerjun is located at the height of 5100 meters and lies just above Dingboche on a hill at the edges of the Chhukung valley. Overnight stay at Dingboche.
We follow a trail passing through the stone walled fields and alpine landscape. The views on the way are simply breathtaking as we trek to head of Imja valley. On the trail, we will also have spectacular mountain views of Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Ama Dablam and Island Peak. We will reach Chukung around midday. After the lunch, we start climbing to reach Chukkung Ri. The climb to Chhukung Ri involves some easy scrambling near the summit. From the top, we can look directly across the valley for a fantastic view of Ama Dablam and Amphu Labcha peaks. We descend back to Chhukung to spend the night.
Since today we will be reaching the highest pass of the trek, we will start our hiking at first light. The route leads for another absolute wilderness away from the main trekking area, the trek follows the upper moraine. It is a steady climb toward the Kongmala pass. Upon reaching the top, we see cairn wrapped in prayer flags, marks of the pass. Behind us is the landscape of icy lakes ahead down of which is the Khumbu Glacier. The final descent is the most difficult stage of the trek today, upon climbing the moraine on the far side, the trail turns north through Khumbu Glacier which takes us to Lobuche. We stay the night at Lobuche.
The trail follows windy and rocky path with crest of north ridge to Everest along with Mt. Pumori, Mahalangur, Lingtern, Khumbutse, Nuptse, etc. Trail continues along side of Khumbu Glacier to Gorakshep. You can feel the buzz and excitement of the place, packed with potential future summiteers of Everest! After the strolling around the base camp area we will descend later that day down the same ridge back to Gorak Shep for some much-earned rest and sleep. Overnight stay in Gorakshep
The trail climbs 2/3 hrs. up to Kala Patthar (5545 m/18192 ft) early in the morning to see first day sun light from top of the world (Mt. Everest) which is simply breathtaking. However, we need to be prepared for trekking in the dark and cold temperature (the temperature varies according to the season). Furthermore, there is always a chance for chilly winds which are quite common. We return back to the Lobuche for an overnight inclusive full board meals.
Today’s hike to Dzongla will be 3-h hours long. The trail goes beside the river bed off the stream and provides us the lovely view of towering heights of Ama Dablam and Kangtega-Thamserku. We pass through a stupa and a lake named Chola Tsho. We cross the Chola Khola on a bridge before reaching Dzongla. Overnight in Dzongla.
Early morning as we get out of our lodge we will be greeted by the mesmerizing sight of Cholatse looming over. Today’s hike will be on a difficult side. Our walk begins through a trail passing through the western side of Dzongla. The path descends; we will go beside the stream coated with ices on some places to reach to the top of the basin, from where we can have the stunning view of the Chola Lake and the Ama Dablam which appears over a range of mountains in the south and Cholaste soars on the west. The final climb to the Cho La can be a little tricky as the trail curves round a crevasse. The top of the pass is marked by prayer flags and cairns and provides us with the beautiful view of the majestic peaks. Although long, the path leading down to Thangnak can be easily made out from the pass because it is just decent but can be hazardous if rocks are glazed by ice, a bit of cautiousness is needed. The trail brings us to the Ngozumpa glacier edge after short walk, which is longest glacier in Nepal. Then after from the other side of the glacier, we can have the view of beautiful Gokyo Lake. On the edge of the Gokyo Lake, Gokyo village is situated where we will be staying overnight.
We climb Gokyo Ri today and enjoy views of the incredible mountain vista. It is a two- hours climb to the top of the peak, providing a panoramic view of Cho Oyu, Gyanchung King, Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cholatse, Tawache and many more. Those with more time and energy can make a trip up the valley to another lake, marked with the name Ngazumpa on the maps, or even beyond to a fifth lake. The view from ‘Scoundrel's Viewpoint’, located at the edge of the 5th lake, is astonishing. We trek back to Gokyo and spend the night there.
After having one day rest and some sightseeing in Gokyo, our next trek will be to Marlung via Renjo-La pass. Our trail moves alongside Dudh Pokhari (lake) for a while. We walk for around two hours before descending towards the Renjo La pass. After about 3 hours, we gain the Renjo La where a dazzling view of the Everest itself, Lhotse, Cholatse and Taboche can be seen shining in the sun. Continuing our journey, the trial steps down a stone staircase and then need to scramble to reach the south bank of a small dazzling lake named as Angladumba Tsho. The prescence of ice on the trail while descending down can make our descent a bit hazardous. Along the way we see Relama Tsho and Renjo Lake. we walk down through narrow valley clogged with giant boulders to Lumde where there is a support Lodge but it can be closed often. We walk almost for an hour from Lumden (4350m) to get to Marlung on the east bank of the Bhote Kosi. Overnight stay at Marlung.
The descent from Marulung to Thame follows a traditional route used for centuries by the Tibetan traders. We cross the Bhote Koshi River and descend to Taranga. The trail continues to descend and we cross two bridges before reaching Thame. Overlooking Thame is its famous Gompa situated some the fields, on a hill to the west. Established some 325 years ago, the Gompa has three big images of Chenresig (Avalokiteswara), Guru Rimpoche, Buddha Sakyamuni. Leaving this village behind we come to the world’s highest hydroelectric power station built on Austrian help. From here, we descend gradually on a trail that passes through a few small villages before reaching Namche Bazaar which is probably the biggest town in the Everest region. Overnight stay in Nmache Bazaar.
We will walk though rhododendron and pine forests with the view of distance snow covered peak before arriving Phakding and then to Lukla This will be our last night on the mountain, which can be bittersweet. Overnight stay in Lukla.
In the morning, you'll hop a brief flight from Lukla to Kathmandu, where your journey both began and ends. You will be transferre to your hotel, where you can have a nice room wiht good hot shower and take your time relaxing.
